What Really Happens in the Operating Room

“The surgery went well.”

For many horse owners, those are the words they’ve been waiting to hear. What happens between the moment the horse is taken into the operating room and the reassuring phone call a few hours later, however, remains largely unseen.

Preparing for the deciding moment

Long before the first surgical step begins, the horse is carefully positioned. Specialized padding is used to protect muscles, joints, and nerves throughout the anesthesia. For an animal weighing several hundred kilograms, every detail matters. The horse’s position is individually adapted to the planned procedure and closely monitored throughout the operation.

The surgical site is then prepared. The skin is thoroughly cleaned, sterile drapes are applied, and all necessary instruments are arranged and checked. Every step follows strict medical protocols. The goal is to create the best possible conditions for both the procedure itself and the healing process that follows.

Focus, precision, and seamless procedures

Once surgery begins, the team’s focus extends far beyond the condition or injury being treated. At the same time, attention remains on the patient as a whole. While the surgeons perform the procedure, heart rate, respiration, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and other vital functions are continuously monitored. Any change is detected and assessed immediately.

No two surgeries are ever exactly alike. Some procedures require exceptional precision within an extremely limited space.
