Regenerative Therapy

This discipline of veterinary medicine is still comparatively young but is already used regularly by our doctors at Hanse Equine Hospital, because it offers great potential for the healing process in horses. The main focus is treating musculoskeletal illnesses, conditions or injuries – that is, the horse’s locomotive system – including chronic joint disorders or tendon defects.

The fundamental principle of this type of therapy is the targeted use of endogenous cells and growth factors to alleviate inflammation and regenerate new tissue. Cells and autologous blood products such as the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA) protein and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contain a multitude of cytokines and growth factors. These have a growth-stimulating, differentiating or chemotactic influence that controls important physiological cell activities. The IL-1RA protein in particular has an anti-inflammatory and calming effect, while PRP introduces growth factors and stimulates the regeneration of tissue (tendons, ligaments).

This means they play an important role in wound healing and other regenerative processes.

The patient’s blood is specially prepared to be used for a targeted regenerative effect. Preparation and treatment are carried out as outpatient procedures at Hanse Equine Hospital.

Preparation of endogenous inflammation inhibitors takes place in our own hospital laboratory and usually takes around 24 hours.

Stem Cell Therapy

cell therapy can be used for tendon lesions, as well as bone or cartilage injuries in the legs, or for healing fractures. Hanse Equine Hospital works closely with Boeringer Ingelheim, a company that produces Arti-Cell FORTE®, the first stem cells to be used for horses.
