Internationally renowned title in sports medicine and rehabilitation
As a veterinarian specialising in sports medicine, Clinic Director Dr Jens Koerner has been recognised as a “Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (Equine)“ (Dipl.-ECVSMR) on 16 March 2023. This makes him the only German practising equine physician who is entitled to hold both the American ACVSMR diploma title and the corresponding European award.
What does ECVSMR mean?
The European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation is an internationally renowned organisation that promotes and advances the fields of veterinary medicine, sports medicine and rehabilitation in Europe. Since 2018, veterinarians can obtain the diploma in these fields as a postgraduate certification. Only veterinarians who have qualified and applied in their respective field through an extremely demanding diploma programme consisting of theoretical teaching content, practical training and their own research are awarded. Apart from Dr Jens Koerner from the Hanse Equine Hospital, only two university professors from Berlin and Hanover have been awarded the European title for the field of sports medicine and rehabilitation in Germany so far.

ECVSMR – the European equivalent of the American ACVSMR title
The ACVSMR title has already been known and highly respected in the USA and North America since 2017, as only the best medical professionals in the country are even admitted to one of the extremely demanding diploma examinations. As with the ECVSMR diploma, the prerequisites for this are a completed degree and extensive research results, as well as several years of specialist medical practice. After submitting the documents, an internationally renowned committee decides on admission to the examination. In 2015, Dr Koerner was admitted to the US diploma examination and passed it in 2017 in Orlando, Florida. As a result, the US umbrella organisation for equine sports medicine and rehabilitation awarded him the internationally renowned ACVSMR diploma.
This makes Dr Jens Koerner currently the only practising equine sports medicine specialist who is allowed to carry both the ACVSMR and ECVSMR titles.
